ANATOMY OF A SHOW (or an autopsy of a potentially great one).

London England. I'm in my living room surrounded by a swag of gifts from fans who attended my New Year's Eve show in Manchester last night. I posted a picture on facebook if you haven't seen. Over the years I've often said with gratitude that because of the very fortunate life I've made from music I really don't want you to spend money on gifts for me. You are my employer and I have the best job in the world. I feel so blessed and a bit like a spoiled child when you spend your hard earned money on me anyway-and gifts; well they just feel like they should be showered on someone more deserving. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate it. On the contrary I'm humbled by the effort and I always try to honour your kindness by making use of the gifts in some way.

But the biggest gift you can give me is joy-of which I spoke about on stage (and is hopefully the topic of this blog). You see, I've been obsessed with the difference between happiness and joy recently. Many people have pondered it but perhaps the most pop culture appropriate in my universe is a musing by George Lucas who compared (forgive me while I paraphrase) the two emotions thusly : happiness fades but joy endures. Joy is also much more rare.

Happiness, like the kind you get when you buy your first car, can never be exceeded. You can purchase another car, a more expensive car. But nothing will ever quite top the thrill of that first time. You can try to replicate it your entire life but you'll never feel the degree of happiness you felt the day you held the keys of your first car (mine was a rusty yellow one with a beat up stereo I inherited from a sister

Joy, on the other hand-is never replicated because every joyful experience is unique and each one can be accessed any time you think about it. Like last night, for example, when I burst into tears mid way through singing ' I knew I loved you'. You see, I thought about my career. I thought about 20 years in the business (the treacherous, vile, greedy, electric, exciting and ultimately shallow music industry) and the fact that through all of the years you've stood by me. Then I thought of the point in my life when I wrote the song with Daniel Jones-when our record company told us we didn't have any hits (on an album with "Affirmation" and "Crash and Burn" on it!). I thought about how I'd been struggling with depression and very dark thoughts. I thought about how I didn't believe in love anymore. And I wrote lyrics about a fictional person who believed in love at first sight and happy ever afters.

As I sang the song on stage 13 years later-during a show that behind the scenes had been absolutely fraught with technical disasters and a calamity of hurdles all week just to get to show time; I realized I had finally met the person I was singing about all those years ago. My soul mate and my one true love. I knew I'd love him. I just hadn't met him yet.

Like my album, "Secret Codes and Battleships" (which the more I think about it, is sort of my life story as an album)-the journey to happiness has been so difficult at times. For every positive step there's been a grey one where I've thought the sun would never shine again-but it did and does sometimes.

Not every day. And not eternally. But in moments of joy that I've filed away in my mind to dust off when the siren's call is just too deafening.

So sum up-all through the show-as hard as I'd worked and as special as some of the arrangements and staging had been-I was coming down really hard on myself wanting the show to be perfect for you. In my heart I felt like there were moments that were failing. I know we didn't fail! The show felt very special. It's just that there were challenges behind the scenes. I know the audience couldn't tell (because we're professionals!) but it made giving you the show you deserve that much more of a challenge because of gremlins in computers and odd technology hiccups. We pushed through and I was so proud of the band for doing such a great job under pressure. Then I got to that song and the show reached a place where real joy presented itself and became something I felt you deserved: it became real. Never to be repeated. Not to be faked or accessed on demand like cable tv or music in 'the cloud'. It became a rare moment of joy.

In essence, we had that moment together. Everything leading up to it-your support of me through the years, the catwalk we built so you would have a great view-the songs I played as you were entering the building-even the outfits you wore that night-all of it mixed up together to make a magic that enabled us to have a moment together than could never be repeated.

Thank you for my joy.
And here's to more moments in our lives.
Love always
Darren

Finally back in my hotel room after a massive NYE in Manchester. Wanted to say a final thank you to each and every one of you who came. Some people had gone to such extraordinary efforts to be there and it meant so much. I loved your outfits, your replica jackets (yes I saw them!) and your gifts which are now firmly in my possession. I tried to sign and meet as many people as I could afterwards... - thanks to everyone for being so patient and understanding! That was a massive set list to get through (21 songs and then an impromptu acoustic set!) and then almost 2 hours of meeting and greeting after. But it was the least I could do to return the massive effort and generosity you showed in choosing to spend the night with us. Thanks to one and all. To my band and crew : thank you. But the most massive thanks to my incredible P.A Tracey Turner who literally made it all possible. She's been planning this show for almost a year and the girl done good. Happy New Year!

Finally back in our London home and unpacking some of the many gifts you guys gave me last night. I've taken a picture of a handful just to show you I did receive them. Pictured here a book made by my Italian fans, a signed flag from the Mexican clan, a hand-made brooch I will wear on my next jacket, my favourite cereal and of course purple hearts and SW toys. You ARE the kindest sweetest most awesome people in the world and I love you! Thank you! xxx

HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM ME TO YOU

I've made a little Christmas video message for all of you. It took me weeks to film all the little parts and come up with exactly what I wanted to say. It means a lot to me so I hope you like it. It comes from the heart.

Normally I make a card or post some kind of artwork but this year I wanted to make a video piece. So I did. It's the thought that counts right?

Regardless of religion-this time of year always makes me so grateful for what I have and for those I love. You are a huge part of my gratitude. Making 'Secret Codes and Battleships' would have been a hundred times more difficult if it wasn't for all of you. Your support, faith and belief in me got me through my darkest days and is a constant source of inspiration. Knowing that you encourage me and want me to succeed has given me so much strength and purpose and I can never repay you for that. Instead all I can do is keep doing what I love to do and say, at every chance I get, thank you. Thank you for inspiring me and for allowing me to do every day the thing that makes my heart sing. I hope you have a wonderful holiday time whatever your beliefs-and that 2012 is the year of love.

In fact,I hope you're smothered in love!
Always,
Darren

Review:Darren Hayes-The Tivoli-11.05.2011

By:Heidi Maier Tom Magazine

Anyone that witnessed Darren Hayes` triumphant homecoming show at QPAC`s Concert Hall back in 2007 will tell you that they saw something special that night. The Time Machine tour signaled the emergence of a performer quite unlike anybody I`d ever seen in that Hayes was beginning to take tentative, occasionally quite bold, steps towards incorporating an immense and obvious fondness for theatricality into his live shows. He was beginning to experiment with lighting, stagecraft and the limitations of physical performance, of moving around and inhabiting the stage on which you stand. That love, some four years later, has come full circle and was brilliantly realised on Saturday night as he returned home in support of his recent record, the sonically and lyrically ambitious Secret Codes and Battleships.

The standing-room only gig at the Tivoli was sold-out and the crowd on the verge of frenzy by the time Hayes eventually took the stage around 9pm. Behind him was an intricate backdrop on which large, mostly vintage-inspired images - a bird and what looked to be an illustration of a toy tin plane - dominated, each of them overlapping in beautiful collages that, depending on the lighting, either appeared as old-fashioned, watercolour-like paintings or old-world paper cut-outs dimly lit from behind. In the middle of the stage, towards the back, was what seemed to be a tiny desk, with a 50s-style make-up case sitting atop it. At the very front of the stage, on the right-hand side, was another tiny table, this one adorned with what initially appeared to be a wooden picture frame but was later revealed to be a symbolic mirror of sorts.

Hayes himself emerged in almost total darkness, illuminated only by the neon blue glow of the lit-up umbrella he was carrying as he launched into ’Taken By The Sea.` It is the first song on the album and one that sets the overall musical and lyrical tone of the project. Like most of the album, it explores love`s many faces, chronicling his experiences of it as an emotion that is as much the inspiration for an aching lament (as in the scathingly self-lacerating ’Stupid Mistake`) as it is the source of a paean to the dualistic terror and comfort of falling in love.

He is no stranger to writing songs that are, often in deeply resonant ways, about the wholly immersive experience of love, be it positive, negative or something liminal and in-between. Even the stomping rhythmic beats of Savage Garden`s ’Break Me, Shake Me` - which is performed with the full accompaniment of his five-piece band - aren`t quite what they seem. Hayes writes pop songs, yes, but they`re many-layered and as much about uncertainty, loss and torment as happiness or contentment. He can write a song that is pop in its purest, loveliest, most uplifting, smile-inducing form - ’The Animal Song` is proof enough of that - but he traverses dark and difficult terrain with the sort of knowingness that is earned only through intense suffering.

Much of the night`s set-list drew heavily from his latest album and the show was one of those all too rare but richly rewarding live shows that seamlessly and artfully blends spectacle with substance. This was a show that offered its audience sumptuous stage design, stellar musicianship and wondrous vocals that showcased truly compelling, emotionally resonant songwriting. Hayes, as anybody that has seen him perform live will attest, is a born showman. Onstage, he gives himself wholly to his muse, exploring both the space he inhabits up there and the moods of the crowd to whom he is singing with a singular, almost unbelievable power.

He flails and whirls around the stage, often opening his arms in a wide arc and simply spinning as the music soars around him. His voice is a stunning instrument, capable of shifting in a heartbeat from his stupendously soaring falsetto to lower, whisper quiet tones. He channels heartbreak, angst and sadness with the same naked, utterly revelatory ease that he does pleasure and unbridled joy. It is lofty praise, sure, but not an exaggeration to say that he is possessed of the most expressive, emotive, note-perfect voices I`ve ever encountered live. It is the sort of voice that, yes, gives you goosebumps.

Perhaps the most brilliantly realised moments of the night were the most unexpected. They came when those tiny tables finally began to make sense. They were, indeed, representative of backstage dressing tables and it was while seated at one, behind a folding screen, lit only from behind, that Hayes morphed into a shadow creature. He wet his hair and slicked it back, painted his face with vaudeville-inspired make-up and eventually emerged to perform a rendition of his song 'Hot Tub Blues' that was as strangely, strikingly magical and stunningly inventive as anything I`ve ever seen enacted on a stage. He sang as though possessed, effortlessly and powerfully channeling a righteous, lovelorn 20s or 30s cabaret songstress. His voice was fire and brimstone, ravaged and raw, his physical movements imbued with the unselfconscious sensuality of a seasoned burlesque performer.

By the time he had worked his way to the front of the stage, the role of the wooden frame slowly became clear. It was both a metaphor and a mirror, functioning as a sort of two-way reflective surface in which Hayes saw himself (or a version of himself) and his audience glimpsed yet another fragment of the man whose music they`d come to hear. As he removed the thick theatrical make-up, he sat quietly for a moment before launching into a wrenching, minimalist rendition of Savage Garden`s ’I Don`t Know You Anymore.` At the song`s end, he was overcome. You could both see the tears in his eyes and feel them prickling in your own. It was, in a night that was unquestionably among the very best live performances I have ever seen, the sort of soaring, stunning catharsis that at once breaks and gladdens the heart. Hayes is without a doubt the sort of performer who, to paraphrase the American poet Mary Oliver, at once embraces and challenges "the fading of the dearest, wildest hope, and the dark heart of the story that is all the reason for its telling."

Review: Darren Hayes opening night at Liverpool 02 Academy

by Angela Johnson. Published Sun 16 Oct 2011 01:12, Last updated: 10-16-2011

After a four year break from live performance, from the moment charismatic Aussie singer Darren Hayes took to the stage, the heaving throng were eating out of the palm of his hand.

Promised to be the first of four 'intimate' gigs, the clammy air at opening night for the former Savage Garden frontman was alive with anticipation.

Enveloped by complete darkness, save for the glowing purple light of an umbrella held aloft, Hayes launched into 'Taken By The Sea' - the hypnotic first track from new album "Secret Codes and Battleships." Given that the record will not be unleashed on the general public until Monday, Darren knew how to make his Liverpool audience feel special. Welcoming fans, he confirmed our status as an exceedingly lucky bunch, asserting that some of the tracks about to be witnessed were previously unheard "by any other human beings."

Hayes dressed to impress in a smart black suit, and die hard fans will have spotted the purple heart fixed to the back of his jacket, no doubt part of a running themed hunt for 'secret codes' Darren has encouraged online in the build up to the album release.

Easing in his less fanatical followers, Darren performed latest single Talk Talk Talk, a catchy tune which grows on the listener with every repeat of the chorus. Onto the evening's more nostalgic tracks, next came the gratifyingly familiar chords of To The Moon and Back. A surefire winner with fans old and new and amidst the increasingly sweaty conditions in the O2 Academy the mood instantly lifted as the crowd belted out the lyrics at their Australian hero.

Slipping between old and new tracks effortlessly, Hayes turned the temperature up a notch and near sent the crowd into meltdown with his sizzling falsetto in love song Insatiable, quickly followed by powerful new track Bloodstained Heart and old favourite Strange Relationship. In a gratifying return to Savage Garden's heyday, Hayes performed quirky track The Animal Song live for the first time in twelve years. Admittedly, some crowd members looked fairly bemused, while energetic fans became lost in the moment, "careless and free" while declaring a desire to live like animals.

Over the extensive two-hour set, Hayes playfully altered previous hits, mixing Break Me Shake Me's lyrics with the instantly recognisable hook from Billie Jean by Michael Jackson before turning the lights down to don a pair of glowing green sunglasses and a Jedi lightsabre-esque walking cane to perform effervescent track Popular, echoing the chorus from iconic 80s classic 'When Will I Be Famous' by Bros.

Then, in an unusual and bold move, Darren disappeared behind a back-lit screen to apply Harlequin clown make-up to perform an old-school cabaret track during which, it must be said, the crowd seemed to lose focus. But Hayes' humour soon shifted as he re-captured our imagination, sitting facing the audience at a makeshift mirror, as if alone in a dressing room, slowly removing his "clown" make up. Undoubtedly the highlight of the gig for me, returning to un-rivalled form as he sang an emotionally-charged rendition of I Don't Know You Anymore, an album track from Affirmation album which truly tugs at the heart strings. It is moments such as this that assert Hayes as a performer not to be dismissed as a mere 'pop star', he has matured somewhat in recent years and so has his music.

Moving into the final part of the set, Hayes pumped up the crowd with the gleefully energetic Crush (1980 Me) and 90s hit I Want You before the inevitable encore as Hayes was actually drowned out by the hoarse-throated crowd for the signature ballad he'll never shake off (and why would he?) - Truly Madly Deeply.

Filtering slowly out of the sweat-soaked venue, spirits lifted, the buzzing crowd enthused about the unique and intensely intimate gig - Hayes certainly delivers on his promises.

Glorious

This was written by Darren Hayes on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 11:23pm

It's no secret I'm a Michael Jackson fan. Many people know that he was a huge inspiration to me growing up. Many also know that part of my connection to the song 'Black Out The Sun' is that, although I didn't write the song about M.J - I recorded it the day he passed away and I hear that emotion in the vocal every time I listen to it. What not many people know is that I did write a song about Michael after he died. It's called Glorious and it's a bonus track on the special and collector's editions of the new album. Given that the news is presently focused on the darker side of his passing - I thought I'd publish the lyrics to the song I wrote in celebration of the light he brought to my life. Here are the lyrics to Glorious.

Glorious
You will never get older and you will never feel pain
Or fill the room with laughter like you used to
And I won't hear you speaking or others call your name
In spite of this the world will still continue
And you will always remain in my heart forever young
Sun and wind won't change you and you'll escape the hands of time
And now your beauty won't betray you and your future's paved with gold
But in my mind you are suspended and you will be forever young
I'm a little bit hopeful that we all carry on
But part of me still thinks we're all just stardust
And from the highest mountain I went to make a sound
I thought that if I called out you would answer
But no one did
And you will always remain in my heart forever young
Sun and wind won't change you and you'll escape the hands of time
And now your beauty won't betray you and your future's paved with gold
But in my mind you are suspended and you will be forever young
I know the rules of the game
For every sunset the light has to fade
But baby a light like yours was so glorious
Glorious
