Judy Collins, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johny Irion, Darrell Scott, Darren Hayes and Cody Carpenter shine at ASCAP's Music Café

ASCAP's Music Café at the Sundance Film Festival headed into its 4th and 5th day with stellar performance by both legendary and up-and- coming songwriters.Bruce Hornsby and Mike Doughty turned in two great return performances. Judy Collins, who has thrilled audiences with thoughtful and socially-aware folk music for more than 40 years, performed songs from throughout her incredible career. Grammy Award nominee and ASCAP Award-winning songwriter Darrell Scott performed a set of songs drawn from his five albums and songs that have been recorded by more than 50 artists.

Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion delighted the café crowd with beautiful harmonies and a great sample of songs from their new album, Exploration. Guthrie is the daughter of ASCAP member Arlo Guthrie and the granddaughter of folk music legend Woody Guthrie. Darren Hayes, formerly of multi-million album sellers Savage Garden, stunned the audience with his soaring vocals and passionate songs. And wrapping up another great series of performances was Cody Carpenter, who performed material from his highly-anticipated debut album, due out this spring.

In the land of Ashlee Simpson's and other people we can safely categorize as marginal singers, it's good to know there's raw talent out there like Darren Hayes. You know Hayes from Savage Garden fame, with songs like "I Want You" (a.k.a the cherry cola song) and "I Knew I Loved You." Hayes is known around the world in a Kylie Minogue way — they can't walk around any streets, except in America, without causing a riot.

Hayes released two critically acclaimed CDs since he split up with Savage Garden's other half: Spin gave us the gay popular "Insatiable" and The Tension and The Spark that made fun of popular culture with uber pop "Pop!ular."

Hearing him perform live, "struggling with technical problems," as he'd tell us later (you wouldn't know it), you understand why fame would come his way. The man pours his soul out and keeps nothing to himself: he spills his guts, and his skills help showcase a voice that can personally bring me to tears with a single sentence: he's the genuine article.

"The record company wanted to release a greatest hits and, you know, have another CD out there from Savage Garden" he tells me, "and I had the option to let it happen, or get involved."

It's a good thing Hayes got involved. Truly Madly Completely: The Best of Savage Garden just hit stores boasting 7 rare tracks and 2 unreleased songs, including the new single "So beautiful."

"I'm in love!" Darren told the audience at the Sundance ASCAP showcase, "so that's why you're finally getting a love song from me." One can't help but envy Darren's object of affection with lyrics like "you make me feel so beautiful, no one else I want to be."

Thankfully audiences won't have to wonder long. Darren talked about a concert in L.A soon, and performances in England this April.

"We're doing the whole thing on stage, involving the audience, I'm even changing on stage," he tells us. I know I'll be in the L.A. concert, and if you're a fan like me, I highly encourage you to meet me there.
